The "Window of Tolerance" is a concept in psychology and neuroscience that is used to describe a persons optimal state of arousal for emotional and cognitive functioning. Often articulated as regulated or dysregulated.
This model was originally proposed by Dan Siegel M.D. in his 1999 book, The Developing Mind. It was further developed by Pat Ogden, PhD. and Peter Levin, Ph.D., it is particularly relevant in the context of understanding and managing emotional regulation and stress responses. This model has subsequently had many voices add to it’s theory and application.
Hyperarousal occurs when intense stress, anxiety, or trauma overwhelms a person, leading to symptoms like panic, anger, and impaired thinking.
Hypoarousal is feeling emotionally numb and disconnected, often in response to stress or trauma, resulting in emotional shutdown and emptiness.
